Record numbers hit top grades across borough
MORE than half of the students taking GCSEs this year had reason to cheer after record numbers achieved top grades.
Of the 1,489 Year 11 pupils, 56 per cent managed to notch up five or more A* to C grades, while Camden schoolchildren’s overall performance topped the national average of A to G passes by 0.3 per cent. The average is 98 per cent.
Camden beat its previous record setting year – 2005 – by one per cent.
Seven of the borough’s nine secondary schools improved on last year’s grades, while Maria Fidelis came top of the class boasting a 16 per cent rise on 2005’s results, with nearly 60 per cent achieving five or more A* to C grades at the Phoenix Road school.
They were followed by South Camden Community School in Somers Town, which saw a 12 per cent increase in grades to hit 42 per cent A* to C, Haverstock School in Chalk Farm, which went up by six per cent, and William Ellis School in Parliament Hill, which went up by five per cent.
Praising this year’s batch of graduates, Camden Council’s School’s chief, Councillor Andrew Mennear, said: “This is an absolutely fabulous set of results and is a testament to all the hard work our students and teachers have put in.
“Well done! They should be rightly proud of their achievement, just as the borough’s residents will recognise that our schools are succeeding in providing an environment in which dedicated students can thrive.”

NEARLY half of Camden’s A Level students achieved A or B grades.
Beating the national average by just under one per cent, Camden’s 18-year-old’s notched up 48.4 per cent A or B grades.
They also managed more A* to C grades, scoring 72 per cent compared to the national standard of 71 per cent. However, they got fewer As, at 22.2 per cent, while the English figure is 23.8 per cent.
Their overall pass rate came in lower than the national rate by 0.2 per cent, with Camden’s sixth formers achieving 96.3 per cent.
