‘Let public view mansion’
THE doors to Witanhurst mansion should be thrown open to the public, according to the Highgate Society.
The house, in Highgate West Hill, was sold for £32 million this summer to property developer the Cooper Group. It plans to market the mansion – London’s biggest private residence after Buckingham Palace – as a private home and reports this week suggested it could be sold on for more than £70 million.
The Highgate Society’s Michael Hammerson, who is on the civic group’s environment committee, has called on the Town Hall to make the new owners honour a planning brief drawn up by the society which would see the home open to the public.
He said: “We discussed the ideas of it being used as a conference centre or hotel with a restaurant. It would make the house part of the village and bring people into Highgate. People could go in there and have a meal. It would be a real attraction.”
