Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 13 September 2007

Mosques – inclusive or exclusive buildings?

• AS Labour councillors we urge the council to continue its longstanding work to identify a site in the south of the borough for an Islamic cultural centre and mosque.

However, we are concerned that with the failure to find a site for a school in the area, ostensibly on the grounds of cost, that the council is very much in danger of false promises on this important issue.
We think that sites like the back of the British Library would be very good, if part of a mixed development. The council should therefore use its powers, drawing up a new planning brief for the site to include social housing and a Islamic cultural centre.
Another site is on the land by Euston station, which is due for redevelopment over the next few years.
Muslim families suffer the highest rates of overcrowding in the borough.  A cultural centre would provide a welcome space for community work, study groups and prayer as well as reaching out to the other communities in ways small ‘box mosques’ find it hard to today.
