Goals glut as season kicks off
Camden and Islington soccer leagues begin silverware chase
SCORES of trophy-chasing football teams from across the borough returned to action over the weekend as the Camden and Islington Youth League and the Camden Sunday League kicked-off in style.
Isledon Wolves made a winning return to Market Road when they beat Finsbury Park 2-0 in the under-11s youth league. Fin Salmons finished off a five-man move to give Wolves a deserved lead, before Harry Taylor-Newell wrapped up an excellent win with a great shot from the right wing.
In the same age category, a goal from star striker Charles Prince earned Hampstead a 1-1 draw against Islington Admiral Hawks.
Meanwhile in the under-12s division, Jason Kayila bagged a brace as Somers Town sealed a thrilling 3-2 victory over King’s Cross. Harry Sanger grabbed both goals for King’s Cross.
In the under-10s category, FDS netted a last-gasp winner to clinch a 1-0 win over Hampstead. The older age groups brought better joy for Hampstead, as the club’s under-13s stormed to a 4-0 win over Crown and Manor, while the under-14s were winning 4-0 in their opening match thanks to two goals from CJ Burke, and strikes from Seb Sundvik and Elliott Powell, before floodlight failure stopped play.
MEANWHILE there were goals galore as the Camden Sunday League returned with a bang at Hackney Marshes. In Division One, Phoenix started their campaign with a pulsating 1-1 draw against Reddot ‘A’.
James Cole gave Phoenix an early lead when he headed home from close range. But Reddot hit back to take a point when Paul ‘Trigger’ Reid played a neat one-two with Jon Dowsett before slotting the ball past the keeper.
The game of the day in Division Two saw North Side beat Hornsey 4-3, while in Division Three AC Scorpions sealed a titanic 7-2 win over AFC Shooters.
