Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 20 September 2007

Smell, damp and danger is too much

• ON July 23 this year, I discovered there was a flood under the hallway and bathroom flooring.
Upon report, the council repairs came and ripped up the floorboards in both areas to establish the cause of the leakage.
They did not replace the boards, leaving me with a number of two-inch gaps in both areas again.
A week later they came back to put down temporary boards.
Because of constant walking on the hallway and bathroom floors its more obvious that the temporary floorboards would have now dislodged and in a dangerous state.
To add to the big enough problem the toilet pan has now become loose from the temporary floorboards and the results in a four-inch gap between the boards and the concrete floor.
I have had five weeks of this perilous and ongoing situation (still ongoing) plus the dreadful damp smell.
As I suffer from acute bronchitis and asthma this is causing me a lot of stress. I have moved into sheltered housing because of my complaint and this is obviously not helping in any way.
I have now been informed by the tenancy manager, estate manager and my warden that the flat below mine, which is vacant, was a priority regarding repairs over my flat.
It would appear my warden is frightened to voice her opinion to the council.
They have now completed the entire new flooring to the vacant flat while I am still in this precarious position.
I am still waiting for the council to condescend to complete the work to the hall and bathroom.
I was offered a temporary or two day stay at the Denton estate but I declined the offer.
I did ask my estate officer to put herself in my position and come and stay in my flat to see how she could cope with no floor boards and the odious damp smell.
Sadly she declined my offer. I wonder why?
The weekly rent here is £160.
It once again appears that neither my tenancy manager nor anybody else employed by the council has no interest in this tenant’s problems whatsoever.
I should not be writing this letter but evidently this is the only way in which I can express my point of view. I remain a rather disgruntled sheltered housing tenant.
