Launch: CRi boss Bernie Casey and Councillor Kirsty Roberts
Numbers add up for the 184 drugs centre
A WALK-IN drug treatment centre in the heart of Camden Town’s crack cocaine market will reduce addiction and cut crime, it was claimed at its official launch on Tuesday. The 184 centre, in Royal College Street, will treat 300 full-time clients with class A drug problems as well as welcoming up to 500 addicts off the streets each year in an initiative funded by Camden Council and run by not-for-profit group Crime Reduction Initiatives (CRi).
Councillors, police and project bosses at the launch were keen to play down the fears of neighbours, 11 of whom lodged objections when CRi made its planning application last year.
CRi boss Bernie Casey said addicts would sign strict behaviour contracts when they used the centre while CCTV and support from the police would ensure Royal College Street remained safe.
Cllr Kirsty Roberts said: “For every one pound spent on drugs services there is a saving of £9.50 on health and crime costs – ultimately we are looking to improve the area for residents.”
Inspector Taylor Wilson of Camden police said his officers would work closely with project staff.
Neighbours are invited to view the centre on Tuesday between 4.30pm and 6.30pm.
