Mansion ‘doomed’
THE Victorian Highgate mansion, Athlone House, looks doomed as architects for the new owners prepare plans to demolish the building. The house, in Hampstead Lane, has been bought by a mystery multi-millionaire and they now plan to build a luxury home on the site.
Lawyer David Cooper, working for the owners, is meeting with members of the Athlone House Working Group today (Thursday) to talk them through a dossier prepared by historic homes expert Dr Mervyn Miller.
He said: “The current building is a complete muddle and the plans will replace it with something vastly superior.”
The Athlone House working group chairman Jeremy Wright said: “We plan to talk with the architects in details to evaluate the proposals. Our main concern is that no new building should impact on the views from Kenwood and the Heath.”
