‘Chill out’, ice-cream men tell traffic wardens
TRADITIONAL ice-cream vans are being driven out of Somers Town because of impatient traffic wardens, two brothers have claimed. Genghis and Naz Ahmet, who have been trading in Camden for 16 years, said they get a ticket every time they stop.
They want wardens to grant them the same 15 minutes’ grace they say is given to other motorists on single-yellow lines.
Naz said: “They are issuing us with immediate tickets. They used to give us 20 minutes. We’ve got keys to some estates because they want us to come in, but Camden won’t give us a licence. ”
Gengis added: “Every time we want to stop they issue us with a fine for £250. They don’t even give us the chance to move on. The parents think they are out of order. Ice-cream vans have been around for years, they should give some leeway.”
A council spokeswoman said: “This vendor was refused a street trading licence a number of years ago, and has subsequently been reported for unlicensed activity.”
