‘Probably the best in the world’

As Spurs crash to another heavy defeat, Jol pays homage to Gunners

SPURS manager Martin Jol reckons Arsene Wenger’s glory Gunners pass the ‘Carlsberg test’.
The Dutch manager admitted: “They are probably the best team in the world.”
He was speaking after watching his side crash to another defeat at White Hart Lane – their 19th failed attempt to thwart Wenger’s heroes.
His praise for the Gunners may grate with the Tottenham faithful, who have to watch on as sorry Spurs sit 18th while their north London rivals top the Premier League.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who heralded a new dawn for his young guns after Saturday’s 3-1 rout, pleaded with chairman Daniel Levy not to sack Jol.
He said: “It is not easy and I have only sympathy for him. It has happened to me you know. I hope they give him time.”
It has been a tumultuous summer that has seen the Gunner’s greatest ever player captain Thierry Henry and David Dein leave the club complaining of a lack of ambition.
Rumour that Wenger might follow Dein were quashed last week when the Frenchman stuck to his word and penned a priceless four-year contract.
Now his £30 million squad of blossoming young charges lead the pack and Wenger said he loved it when a plan came together.
He said: “We never forget Thierry. I thought it was important that this young team started well to strengthen the belief at having lost him. But the team is blossoming and that was planned. You see that quality in the side now. We are growing game to game.
“We are consistent. We take all our chances to attack and it’s a pleasure to watch.”
