House with a history
• WITH reference to the sale of street properties (Town Hall homes to go under the hammer as sell-off begins, September 20).
I do not know the history of three of these houses but I do know that of the Prince of Wales Road one (above). This was a privately-owned house which was requisitioned by the borough council to house people bombed-out duringWorld War II.
In spite of the council trying to rehouse the family of tenants by sending decant letters, they refused to move and stayed put for over 60 years. The last member died in February 2007.
So now the house can be sold and taken back into private ownership.
It never was a “council house” as such , that is, purpose-built like the blocks of flats.
Its position will now revert to that of all its neighbours – a privately-owned home again. Name and address supplied
