The poet and his lost post
LETTERS and parcels destined for addresses in Camden Town have been going missing so regularly that fed-up residents claim they are living in the ‘Cantelowes Triangle.’
Among those suffering from post going to the wrong address is poet laureate Andrew Motion, who lives in the area.
Chairwoman of the Camden Square Neighbourhood Association Catherine Hays says she regularly receives letters destined for Mr Motion.
Other households along Murray Mews, Camden Square and Camden Mews claim postal services have reached rock bottom, with deliveries getting later each day, and often important parcels not being delivered at all.
At a meeting of the Camden Square Neighbourhood Association this week a litany of complaints were aired.
Ms Hays, who urged the association’s 250 members to write to Post Office chief executive Adam Crozier, said: “I regularly receive letters for people not at my address. Andrew Motion lives in a house with the same door number as me, but on a different street – and I regularly do the Post Office’s job for them and deliver letters to him.
“Some of our members don’t receive post at all – most of us receive our post in the late afternoon or early evening. Neighbours are regularly sorting out the post and redelivering.” Among the households whose post has gone missing is one who lost six parcels in a month and another which had ordered a school uniform by post which failed to arrive.
Ms Hays added: “We contacted managers and we understand that 23 members of staff responsible for sorting were cut.”
Photographer Alastair Muir, who has lived in the area for 10 years, said he would wait for days for important work related letters. He said: “The post has become more irregular since the Post Office switched from two rounds a day to one.”
A Post Office spokesman said: “The service in the Camden area has improved over the last couple of years and our latest independently monitored figures show that 92.8 per cent of first class mail in the area reached its destination the next working day.” |
