Neighbours protest as trees face axe
NEIGHBOURS are fighting to prevent four mature lime trees being felled, saying their loss would ruin the character of their street.
The new owners of a house in leafy Christchurch Hill, Hampstead, have applied to have the trees cut down. They are currently protected by a council tree preservation order.
The house was sold with the condition that the trees remain protected, but the new owners are unhappy about sticky droppings from the trees.
Neighbours have objected to the council about the plan to axe the trees. Artist Malvina Dewis said: “It would be destructive and terrible. The trees make up part of an important avenue of trees right down the road.”
Another neighbour, Diana Evans, added: “They are a great amenity. Planning permission was only granted for that house to be built on condition that the trees were kept there.”
The lime trees were watered by neighbours before the house behind them was built in 1985.
As recently as 2004 the council informally promised to look after the trees after a meeting with residents in Christchurch Hill.
A Town Hall press official said he was unable to comment before a decision is made next month.
The owners of the house declined to comment. |
