The Camden New Journal Challenge Cup

THE quest for glory got underway this week in the Camden Sunday League as more than 20 teams battled it out in the first round of the Camden New Journal Challenge Cup.

Globetown 5,
Hornsey 0

CUP holders Globetown put on a five-star performance as they made a winning start to the defence of their trophy with a resounding victory over Hornsey.
In a one-sided encounter, Peter Walsh gave Globetown a deserved lead, before Paul Dunne added a second.
John Embery added his name to the score sheet as Globetown all but settled the tie before the break as they went in at half time 3-0 up.
Two second half strikes from Danny Severn added to Hornsey’s misery as Globetown cruised to a 5-0 win.

Reddot FC 4,
Surreal Madrid A 2

LEAGUE Champions Reddot made a winning start to their Challenge Cup quest with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Surreal Madrid at Hackney Marshes.
Madrid made the perfect start when they soaked up the early pressure and took a surprise lead with their first real chance of the game.
In the only all-division one clash of the round, Reddot battled their way back into the game and came close to pulling the scores level when man of the match Tony Dowsett hit the bar.
With half time looming, Reddot finally made the breakthrough their pressure deserved when Steven Bruce kept his composure to equalise.
Within minutes of the restart Reddot were ahead when Tony Dowsett unleashed a thunderbolt from 30-yards, but a dubious penalty saw Madrid hit back to make it 2-2.
Reddot again edged in front when Tony Dowsett scored another stunner as he grabbed his second of the game with a spectacular bicycle kick. Michael Dowsett settled matters from the spot after Jon Dowsett was hacked down in the penalty area late on.

Prince of Wales 10,
DL 2

PRINCE of Wales sealed the biggest win of the day as they hit double figures against DL.

The Princes ran riot as Paul Butler, John Purcell and Brian Dunleavy all scored two goals apiece. Dean Spillane, Scott Thurlow and Mark Butler were also all on target as Prince of Wales scored five goals in each half, sealing a 10-2 victory.

RD Athletic 4,
Bertoli 1

RD Athletic booked their place in the second round of the cup with a stylish 4-1 win over Bertoli.

A positive passing move saw Athletic take the lead when Paul Reid slotted home, before Jason Branigan doubled their lead minutes later.
Martin Lovejoy added a third to all but seal the win. But the fourth goal received the biggest cheer of the day when goalkeeper Jimmy Russell scored from the penalty spot, leading to ‘rocking the cradle’ celebrations after he became a dad last week. Bertoli scored a consolation in the final seconds of the match

Tergemo 2,
Boston FC 0

STRIKER Seagun Olodapo scored twice as Tergemo booked their place in the second round of the Challenge Cup.

Olodapo opened the scoring midway through the first half after good work from Dennis Osborne, before grabbing a spectacular second minutes later with a stunning bicycle kick.
