Please return my ‘window on the world’ pleads MS sufferer
A WHEELCHAIR-BOUND man with multiple sclerosis who was burgled as he slept has pleaded for the return of his laptop that is his “window on the world”.
Thieves broke into Steven Berry’s ground floor flat in Adelaide Road, Chalk Farm during Wednesday night after a window was left ajar by a carer.
They unplugged his laptop from the living room then sneaked round his wheelchair in his bedroom and pocketed his wallet and mobile phone.
Mr Berry, 39, (pictured) was given the computer, a silver Apple Power Book, 18 months ago after friends at his local, the Sir Richard Steele in Haverstock Hill, raised £6,000.
It contains thousands of files containing family snaps, music and personal documents that Mr Berry is desperate to have back.
He said: “Maybe someone knows something about what happened. Whoever did this saw my wheelchair sitting there and it bemuses me how they could still do it. My faith in human nature has been rattled. It is very disconcerting this happened when I was in bed.”
His friend Colin Russell said the laptop had provided much-needed contact with the outside world since Mr Berry’s condition worsened two years ago. “Steven is completely paraplegic and is stuck indoors most of the time. That computer was a window to the outside world that he has come to depend on,” he said.
Mr Berry said he was unhappy his window had not been shut but added: “Ultimately I blame whoever took it on themselves to break into my home.” |
