Heroin addict who took Carr papers is jailed for new theft

Serial thief stole sat-nav system from vehicle and broke conditions of Asbo

A SERIAL thief, jailed last year for stealing government documents detailing the new identity of Maxine Carr, has again been sent to prison, this time for a year.
Part-time decorator Darren Jacobs, 36, was sentenced last week for twice breaching his anti-social behaviour order (Asbo) and for taking a satellite navigation system from a car in Fitzjohn’s Avenue, Hampstead, in August.
Jacobs, a heroin addict formerly of Gospel Oak but who now lives in Haringey, asked Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court to take 55 similar crimes into account when sentencing.
In June last year, Jacobs was jailed for 16 weeks after he was caught breaking into a civil servant’s car containing secret documents relating to Maxine Carr, the former partner of Soham murderer Ian Huntley.
The papers were later found on Hampstead Heath.
Detective Sergeant Steven Atkin said at the time that two arrests in Hampstead, including that of Jacobs, had contributed to a marked decline in thefts in the area.
District Judge Deborah Wright told Jacobs, who has been in custody since August: “You’re clearly a man who thinks you can do what you like. The court imposes orders on you and you take absolutely no notice.”
Prosecuting, Rahena Choudhury told how the owner of a black BMW returned to find his window smashed and the satellite navigation system missing.
She said Jacobs was arrested and interviewed and admitted the theft.
Defending, Jonathan Black said: “The (Asbo) breaches were merely that he was found within the prohibition area. He was not committing any offences.
“He is allowed to enter the area to travel to his family.
“His ex-partner and two children live right in the heart of the prohibition area.”
Mr Black added: “He does regret the position he’s in.
“He’s been given more than one chance by the court to address his behaviour and drug problems. He has blown it, he’s blown his chances.”
Jacobs was sentenced to 322 days in prison, of which he will be expected to serve half.
