Heath chiefs ‘failed to back campaign’
HAMPSTEAD Heath bosses have been rebuked for not supporting a campaign to prevent a multi-million pound house being built on the edge of the Heath.
Martin Humphery, of the Heath and Hampstead Society, said the City of London, which manages the Heath, should have supported the society’s efforts to overturn Camden Council’s approval of plans for the Garden House in the Vale of Health.
The society won a High Court battle earlier this year over its bid to mount a judicial review of the decision. The case is expected to be heard in court in March next year.
Mr Humphery said City chiefs had been reluctant to publicly support the society, despite writing to Camden planners objecting to the Garden House proposal.
Jennifer Adams, director of open spaces at the City, defended its decision.
She said: “As a local authority we try not to get into disputes with another local authority. We will give our view to the local authority but we do not want to join in an action against them.
“We did consult and take a view on this but the advice was not to join in a legal action against another local authority.”
Heath management committee chairman Bob Hall added: “There were lots of contacts behind the scenes and we are delighted that a full judicial review is available.” |
