‘Keep the Heath feet friendly’
CAMPAIGNERS opposed to more cycle routes on Hampstead Heath have set up a new group pledging to fight for pedestrian rights.
Heath for Feet says it wants to “preserve the rural and tranquil nature” of the Heath, which should remain a pedestrian – rather than a cyclists’ – haven.
According to the group, too many cycles on the Heath are “ridden at speed and off the dedicated cycle paths”, compromising the safety of pedestrians.
The group has now declared war on the “strong and well-organised” cycling lobby.
Heath guardian the City of London is consulting residents on whether to increase the number of cycle paths on the Heath.
The consultation is part of a massive review of the 10-year management plan, which governs policy on all aspects of the Heath. A new management plan is expected next year.
Cycling campaigners argue that more cycle routes on the Heath will be more environmentally friendly and reduce congestion in the roads in the long term.
But Maureen Clark-Darby, from South End Green, one of the founder members of the new group, said: “The Heath is a pedestrians’ haven. It’s the only one we’ve got. “It’s just not large enough to be used as a public highway. I feel very strongly that it’s a place for walkers to enjoy the natural Heath. Cyclists have the road.”
There are three cycling routes on Hampstead Heath – from Nassington Road to Highgate Road, Spaniards Road to Millfield Lane and West Heath Road to North End Way. |
