Youngsters from Times ABC training in the Canary Islands |
Young boxers have time of their lives in Tenerife
Fighters taken on £7,000 trip to prepare for new season
A TEAM of fighters from Times Amateur Boxing Club were given the surprise of their lives when they were taken to Tenerife in a bid to help them prepare for the new season.
Head-coach Dave Ryan and club treasurer Jimmy Farrell raised more than £7,000 to take the squad of 20 promising young boxers to the Spanish island for an intensive week of training and nutritional advice.
Dave Ryan, who has been with the club for over 35 years, said: “The boys had an amazing time in Tenerife and have come back ahead of the new season looking sharper and hungrier than ever for success. “It was important that we showed them that if they stick to a proper well-balanced diet they can get more out of their training, and develop into stronger, better fighters.”
The trip proved such a huge success that the club is hoping to return to the Canary Islands next year, and have already spoken with the Spanish Boxing Federation about the possibility of setting up a series of bouts against some of the local fighters.
Based at the York Way Community Centre in Copenhagen Street, the club boast some of the most exciting young prospects in London.
Dave added: “As a club we’re on our way back up. Everyone is really looking forward to what promises to be a great season.”
The Times ABC got their campaign off and running on Friday when two of their top talents returned to the ring at a special dinner show held at West Ham Football Club.
Highly-rated lightweight John Lewis was in sensational form as he out-pointed Reece Smith from Gator Boxing Club in Essex over three, two-minute rounds.
The talented 15-year-old, who lives in Caledonian Road, gained a unanimous decision after dropping Smith in the second round.
Meanwhile 14-year-old Paul Tupper also got off to a winning start as he out-pointed West London’s Simon Corcoran in the same duration fight. Competing at an incredible weight of just 35kg, the hard-hitting Acland Burghley pupil, who lives in Tufnell Park, is being heavily tipped to capture a national title within the next year. |
