On-fire Julia sets up Gunner Girls for Uefa Cup glory
League Cup Round Two
Arsenal 3, Birmingham 0
ARSENAL will face West Ham in the next round of the Cup after they beat Birmingham in this round two tie at Boreham Wood on Sunday.
Two goals from Julia Fleeting and a strike from Gemma Davison saw the Gunners through in a match that served as a warm-up for tonight’s (Thursday) home tie in the Uefa Cup Quarter Final.
Arsenal, who are coached by former Parliament Hill School pupil Emma Hayes, beat Breidablik 5-0 on Thursday in Iceland.
Kelly Smith, short-listed this week for the FIFA World Player of the Year, scored twice, while Fleeting also netted a brace. A goal from Lianne Sanderson completed the rout as Arsenal all but booked a place in the semi-finals.
Tonight’s game at Boreham Wood FC kicks off at 7.30pm.
London County Cup
Spurs 5, Manford Way 2
SPURS sealed their place in the third round with a comfortable win on Sunday. Samrawit Bereket scored within two minutes and Shadine Mars made it two by the break.
A Manford penalty made it 2-1 but Mars and Ebony Heath put the home side 4-1 up. Manford pulled another goal back but Rosi Webb’s 25-yard drive saw Spurs through.
Greater London League
Division One
Camden 1, Dynamo 3
A DEFLECTED effort from Carol Brown put Town 1-0 up after a goalless first half against Dynamo North London. But Town were hit by an injury to Mel Johnson and their Islington based rivals snatched an equaliser.
Karleigh Healey kept Town in the game with two great saves, but was unable to stop a wonder strike from the edge of the box. Dynamo sealed it with a third on the break as Town pushed up for an equaliser.
Division Three South
South London 0 Katabella 2
KATABELLA bounced back from defeat with an impressive win over South London on Sunday.
Franziska John came close in the opening minutes but Camden-based Kats finally went ahead when Amy Lamont headed home after good work from Jenny Berlin. South came out fighting at the restart and Kats keeper Rachel Ojelade needed to be on her mettle.
Substitute Tamar Koch came on to bolster the visitors’ midfield before John fired home her second of the game.
Middlesex Girls League
THE good times continue to roll for Hampstead, whose under-13s put 18 goals past Watford Youth.
Edie Connealy opened the scoring early on followed by two from player of the match Kirsty Graham, who went on to bag five goals. Sika Lamar King (4), Shuana Magner (4), Tara Campbell (2) and Georgia Kinsella and Meredith St Claire completed the rout.
Danni Hayes was unlucky to have two goals disallowed.
The under-12s beat Bedfont FC in a friendly at Regent’s Park with Missy Smith, Taylor Deane Bonner and Janet Bunyo on target. The under-11s came from behind to beat London Tigers in a friendly with Paige Blackender scoring a hat-trick.
Gunners in Islington League - Under 15s
Camden 8, Mount Carmel 1
A DEPLETED Mount Carmel were no match for Camden Sports Development at Market Road on Friday night.
Camden were cruising 4-0 by half time and though Mount Carmel pulled it back to 6-1, they were unable to put the brakes on.
Georgia Mays (4), Aisha Bolagi (3) and Charlotte Pierce were all on target for Camden.
The league continues on Friday with Copenhagen Youth Project taking on Heatwave FC.
