‘Mr Asbo’ joins the Town Hall exodus
IAN Walker MBE – the senior council official who masterminded more than 200 anti-social behaviour orders in Camden – is to leave the Town Hall.
He is the latest in a steady stream of high-profile civil servants to quit Camden and follows Borough Solicitor Alison Lowton and environment supremo Peter Bishop out of the door.
Mr Walker is taking up a job as Head of Crime and and Anti-Social Behaviour in Newham Council.
He has been a recognisable figurehead in Camden’s prolific use of Asbos. Credited particularly for work with drug addicts and prostitutes in King’s Cross, Mr Walker was rewarded for his work with an MBE in 2004.
Last night (Wednesday), he said: “It will be difficult to leave a place I love and the great team in Camden who all work together – from the police to the street services team – to share our knowledge and try to get the best results for the borough.”
Mr Walker added: “I’ve had a great time here, meeting people and seeing the difference we can make together. I’ve always seen the community as partners - working with them and not for them.”
The use of Asbos has been squarely under review since the Labour ranks at the Town Hall, in general, firm supporters of using banning orders, were decimated in May’s council elections.
But Lib Dem crime chief Councillor Ben Rawlings yesterday (Wednesday) was among members paying tribute to Mr Walker’s work.
He said: “Ian has given a tremendous service to Camden and its residents, and has played a huge part in making our communities safer. Many will know of his work on enforcement and particularly in King’s Cross, but he has also done some exceptional work in prevention and deterrence, and personally I have always been impressed by his work with young people.” |
