School copper Rod quits the playground beat

A POPULAR policeman who became the first to take up a permanent post at a Camden secondary school is retiring from the post after five years.
Camden’s first Safer Schools officer, PC Rod Muter, will leave his post at Haverstock School at Christmas.
PC Muter, 48, who became the youngest officer to ever join the force when he was 18-and-a-half years old, is moving back to his home county of Norfolk.
PC Muter said: “I’ve been there so long it’s going to be really hard
leaving. I’ll take away that message that every child matters. We’ve tried a few ways of having officers going to schools but we have found that having an allocated officer everyday at the gates improves personal relations. Haverstock is a very diverse school.
In Norfolk there might be issues between children from different villages and I’ll be able to apply all I know to that.”
Inspector Paul Peplow, who runs Safer Schools in Camden assured parents the vacancy would be filled immediately.
He added: “PC Rod has been very influential in setting up the Safer Schools partnership between the police and Camden Council. He was working as an officer in Haverstock School even before Safer Schools came into force. He’ll be missed but his expertise will be put to good use.”
Ins Peplow also promised the only secondary school without its own officer, Maria Fidelis, would have the post filled by the time pupils return in January.
Meanwhile the newest school officer PC Mark Nisbitt said he already feels part of the furniture at South Camden Community School.
PC Nisbitt, 28, first stepped into the hard-to-fill post in May on a temporary basis but applied to stay in September after receiving a welcome reception from the head teacher and pupils.
He said: “Before I started I didn’t know about school’s officers but I immediately settled in at South Camden. Once they became used to me being there it was easier. Now even the more difficult students come up and chat to me and I’m part of it. It’s very rewarding and you see the immediate results your presence is having.”
