Big Brother raises £1,000 for Barney
YOUNGSTERS who stayed up all night in a ‘Big Brother’-style special, hope to raise £1,000 for the tragic family of a man fatally electrocuted.
Some of the youths at Castlehaven youth club in Camden Town who joined in the 24-hour extravaganza last week were related to Ralph Kennedy, who died in September.
Katie Tayler, 16, from Castlehaven Road, eventually beat off her competitors after they were evicted and friends from the outside voted by text.
She said about her win: “The best part of the night was watching my friends put their hands in maggots – it was funny, they were screaming.”
The 10 youths involved were set a gruelling series of tasks by their youthworkers – who also stayed up all night. The challenges included submerging their hands into maggots, competing in a Grease singalong, and reciting an unfamiliar Shakespeare speech.
n HEALTH and safety chiefs have demanded a complete freeze on the release of information surrounding works on the Somers Town council estate where a scaffolder was electrocuted, writes Richard Osley.
The order was confirmed on Monday when the Town Hall knocked back requests for background information on the Mayford estate’s electricity supply – despite being filed under the Freedom of Information Act.
Reporters were told that the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) wanted to keep the information under wraps until investigators had finished probing the death of Ralph Kennedy, 24, also known by the nickname ‘Barney’.
The fact the spiked inquiry had asked for information about the history of the estate suggest the HSE are also looking into past complaints about problems with electricity at Mayford. The New Journal requested information dating back to January last year and did not make reference to the events that led to Mr Kennedy’s death.
A council letter said: “This exemption applies because both the Metropolitan Police and the Health and Safety Executive are currently considering the information you have requested in investigations into the cause of the accident you mention. They have requested that no information is given out at least until their investigations are complete.”
Mr Kennedy, a father-of-two, died from a fatal shock in September. Two other men, one a police community support officer, also suffered minor shocks on the site that month. |
