Gemma helps flick the switch for crescent lights fantastic

A MARKET street marred by violence in recent months put on a dazzling show of lights and singing on Thursday as it celebrated its first ever Christmas party, writes Charlotte Chambers.
Queen’s Crescent has been in the news for all the wrong reasons according to the gathered crowds - who were delighted to be given the chance to challenge its negative image.
Gemma Fox, one of the local stars who performed onstage, said: “I think today’s great. It’s had a bit of a bad reputation but its nice to see the community out. And there’s no trouble – it’s cool, just like it used to be.”
The singer, who was nominated for a Mobo in 2004, and grew up in nearby Woodyard Close, added: “We’ve got our own sign now, so why not our own lights?”
The Kentish Town road unveiled its individual lights after ward councillor and Camden mayor Jill Fraser – who runs a chip shop in the street – put in a special request for them.
She said: “My mayoral theme is about celebrating young people and helping them succeed. Today is to prove to everyone you can bring up kids in the Crescent.”
Singing sensation and former Parliament Hill schoolgirl Ny Gray stole the show with her acapella solo which momentarily hushed the excitable crowd. Ms Gray, from Highgate, is currently recording her debut album called Split Endz in Denmark. It is due to be released in January.
