Shame about Round sound
• I WAS excited or should I say, ecstatic when I read in the New Journal that Feeder were playing two gigs at the newly re-opened Roundhouse in Chalk Farm Road for the charity War Child.
Feeder are one of my absolute favourite bands and I remember the Roundhouse fondly as a place I once performed in when I was a child.
The Roundhouse has been a derelict space for many years and thanks to Torquil Norman’s vision it has now re-emerged as a potential cultural hub.
I met with my companion and we bought a couple of glasses of very nice red wine, and took our seats in the circle with a good view and waited in anticipation. My companion didn’t really know Feeder but I had lent her the single’s album the day before to get her up to speed.
As the roadies went through each instrument I was a little troubled by the sound of the bass and drums, as they sounded a bit woolly but thought this would be rectified by the time the band came on.
Then Feeder came on and the audience erupted, we all love Feeder and at last in our little town of Camden we had a world-class band in our midst. The sound didn’t improve throughout the first few songs but we didn’t care it was Feeder on stage.
Grant Nichols sang with his whole heart and soul and for the next 40 minutes we were all transfixed by them. Sadly, the sound didn’t improve at all and my companion and I couldn’t take any more so we left to find the toilets and the bar. Listening to the random comments of other audience members who had left the arena, the general consensus was that the acoustics were rubbish.
What a terrible shame! I sincerely hope that someone looks into the acoustics of this place because this venue is somewhere we could be proud of in downtown sunny Camden!
