Bubbly babs brings a little sunshine to hospital ward opening
SOAPSTAR landlady Barbara Windsor added a dash of glamour to the opening of a long-awaited sensory room at University College London Hospital on Friday.
Ms Windsor, a favourite as Peggy Mitchell, who runs the Queen Vic pub on the BBC soap Eastenders, was joined by the new room’s fundraisers the London Taxidrivers’ Fund for Underprivileged Children.
Former Carry On star Ms Windsor said she wanted to help out at the Euston Road hospital because it is her local – she was taken there two years ago when she broke her ankle – but also because she supported the cause.
She said: “I’m in a business where it’s nice to give something back. And it’s taxi drivers – who I love – and it’s for children, so it’s nice.” Ms Windsor revealed a black cabbie took her to UCLH for free when he discovered the purpose of her visit.
Camden Mayor Councillor Jill Fraser was late to the opening ceremony after a visit from the Queen delayed her. She said: “I’m even more pleased to meet the Queen of the East End.”
The sensory room, which cost about £8,500, features special lighting, textures and noises for children who need non-medical rehabilitation.
Ward sister Annabel Simmonds said of the new toy-taxi outside the room: “The kids love it. They fight over it, and if they go missing we know where they are.”
