Utility firms to blame for delay
• AS pedestrians and motorists will be only too well aware, the works to rebuild Kilburn High Road Bridge are still continuing.
But it is the traders in Kilburn – small businesses including cafes, newsagents and a local bookshop – who have suffered most.
It has been a miserable 2006 with some shops suffering a drop in trade of 60 per cent.
So I want to draw attention to the poor performance of the utility companies in failing to get the job done and dusted.
BT, EdF, Thames Water – all of them have contributed to recent delays in the completion of the project which is dragging on into December.
The Kilburn Bridge works may be small beer for big companies, but it has threatened the viability of our local retailers.
That is why I want Camden Council to take a more robust approach in its dealings with utilities.
I recently made this point in a written question to Keith Moffitt, Leader of the Council.
He said he would investigate the scope to take a corporate-wide approach. This is to be encouraged. Utility companies can impact on our quality of life in all sorts of ways, so we need to hold them to account.
