Fabregas hails super sub Walcott’s 10 glory minutes
Praise for youngster’s ‘best yet’ Champions League performance
CESC Fabregas hailed Theo Walcott’s Champions League performance on Tuesday night as his best yet, revealing he was hoping to strike up a blossoming relationship with the teenage sensation on and off the pitch.
Supersub Walcott, 17, boosted Arsenal to a 3-1 victory on Tuesday, setting up two goals and making mincemeat of German outfit Hamburger SV in his ten-minute window.
After the game Fabregas, 19, on the shortlist for this year’s coveted Ballon D’Or footballer of the year award, said he was “best mates” with Walcott and liked nothing better than to “hang out” with the village boy from Newbury.
The midfielder said: “We like to hang around together. I really love him because he’s a great lad and great to be around. We hang out and play football on the computer together – I play as Arsenal. People of our age do this sort of thing. There is nothing better than playing with a friend and Theo is a great guy.”
And on the pitch the Spanish ace revealed there’s no one better than his best mate Theo. Wenger this week revealed he won’t rest Cesc and the Spaniard said Theo would soon cement himself in the first team.
He said: “It was difficult for him. I think his confidence took a knock. But he’s really good – the same as Rooney who was the top scorer for England two years ago and then struggled this World Cup.”
Fabregas, sporting a stylish hairdo and clutching his two mobile phones, said he had never heard of Walcott and was bamboozled when manager Arsene Wenger splashed out more than £5 million.
He said: “I was surprised they paid all that money. I follow the Champions League and I’d never heard about him. I didn’t know him – he’s a nice guy to be with and a very good player. “That is why Arsene is my hero. No one had heard of me before Arsene and now I am playing in the first team every week.” |
