Signed and sealed… the cards by celebrity artists
Buyers must wait to discover whose work they have snapped up
TURNER Prize-winning sculptor Anish Kapoor, singer Nick Cave and supermodel Laura Bailey are among famous names contributing to a charity postcard art sale at Acland Burghley School tomorrow (Friday).
Most of the 230-plus postcards on sale at the Tufnell Park school have been designed by Year 9 pupils and teachers, but about 25 are the work of models, artists, writers, actors, musicians and designers.
Buyers will not discover who the creator of their postcard is until they receive a letter from the school the week after the sale.
Former beauty editor of Vogue and Telegraph journalist Kathy Phillips is also among those who have contributed a postcard, but others taking part will reveal their identities only to the buyer who snaps up their card.
Buyers of the postcards, designed around the theme of Every Child Matters, are being asked to pay between £2 and £5, with money raised going to the charity Cancer Research UK.
The 181 students in Year 9 were given time during art lessons to create their cards.
Year 9 head Jonathan Davies used personal contacts to persuade famous names to take part. He said: “It’s going to be quite interesting because people will walk away with a tiny piece of art, possibly by someone quite well known. A lot of people were complaining they couldn’t draw, but there have been some beautiful results. It’s unmasked hidden talents.”
He added: “It’s fantastic that people have been so willing to get involved. Someone we asked for a postcard sent us back a cheque for £500.”
Mulled wine and mince pies will be served at the postcard exhibition tomorrow (Friday), when there will be a cello performance. Pupil Maxi Smith, 14, said: “It’s good that celebrities and artists are joining in because it means the community is getting involved.”
Kenza Marland, 13, added: “It’s a good idea and an easy way to make money for charity, as well as fitting in with our status as an art college.”
The sale runs from 5.30pm until 8pm tomorrow at the school in Burghley Road. |
