Highgate Harriers race ahead
A TOP three finish saw Highgate Harriers women race further ahead of the field in the Metropolitan Cross-Country League on Saturday with another resounding victory at Claybury in Woodford.
Svenja Abel overcame the muddy conditions to seal her second successive win as she completed the testing course in a time of 19 minutes, 11 seconds.
Out of a field of 128 runners, Esther Evans came home in second place in 19mins, 58secs, with leading veteran Kate Jenrick completing the top three finish with a time of 20mins, 35secs.
Astrid Wingler showed her experience to take sixth spot, while Jo Carrick and Elizabeth Ogunde sealed top 20 finishes as they came home in 17th and 19th place respectively.
The result leaves Highgate sitting top of the league with 2,260 points, with Woodford Green in second on 1,909 and rivals London Heathside in third place with a score of 1,857.
Highgate’s men also enjoyed a successful afternoon as they sealed their highest-placed finish of the season so far.
Henry Dodwell was the first Harrier home as he finished fifth, recording a time of 27mins, 13secs. Ryan McKinlay finished eighth in 27mins, 33secs, while Glen Saqui was just five seconds behind in 10th place.
In a closely contested race boasting 287 finishers, Saningo Martyn also ran well to take 15 place in 27mins, 47secs. The result moves Highgate up into fourth place in the league.
Highgate’s youngsters were also well represented on Saturday.
Lawrence Matthewman took eighth spot in the under-17s race, finishing three places ahead of teammate William Laing. Hamish Birrell and George Laing also performed well.
Meanwhile in the girls’ under-15s race, future star Alice Keane finished 10th in 13mins, 13secs, while Samara Williams, Amy-Jane Cotter and Mei Corbett also all enjoyed solid performances.
• HIGHGATE Harriers’ most outstanding senior runner Ben Noad put in a commanding performance in the 10k Cross Challenge on Saturday at Sefton Park in Liverpool, finishing eighth out of a field of more than 400 runners.
Heathsider reigns in Spain
LONDON Heathside’s Angela Howe put her injury nightmares far behind her on Saturday as she won the San Sebastian Marathon in Spain.
Having been out of action for most of the summer, Angela proved she was back to her best as she set a new club record to seal her first overseas victory with a winning time of 2.49.36. |
