Bell restoration
THE bells of St Anne’s in Highgate will be taken down from the tower today (Thursday) for their first major restoration in more than 160 years.
The eight bells at St Anne’s Church in Highgate West Hill date back from 1853 and are in desperate need of repair.
Church managers raised the £42,000 needed to carry out the work earlier this year. The project includes replacing the bells’ worn clappers and ropes, re-tuning the bells and re-hanging them at 90 degrees from the previous orientation so that the clappers hit a new surface.
Bell captain at St Anne’s, John Thorp, who spearheaded the project, said: “All church bells should be renovated every 100 years and St Anne’s have never been taken down or turned.”
The bells are expected to be re-hung in four months. |
