Starter for a bumper hamper appeal as pub quiz smashes record
A RECORD-breaking quiz night at the Oxford Arms pub in Camden Town has boosted the New Journal’s Christmas Hamper Appeal by a whopping £1,700.
The figure is the biggest sum ever raised by the quiz, which has become an annual fixture in the pub’s calendar.
Cash was donated by generous quiz teams and money came pouring in from a giant raffle and charity dares.
Sponsor Paddy Power joined in the fun on Monday night as store manager Eamonn Ruddy, in a horse-and-jockey jape, had to cross the pub floor with work colleague Charmaine Purcell on his back. Former Labour councillor Jake Sumner declined to earn money for the appeal by taking off his shirt. The party’s deputy leader, Cllr Theo Blackwell, who had stripped off in the past, also declined but later made a £50 donation.
Winners of the epic two-hour quiz, the Shingle Bells team, took home £60 worth of Paddy Power vouchers and celebrated by downing their drinks from a miniature trophy.
Contestant John Boon, from Agar Grove, Camden Town, said: “We’ll invest it wisely – in winners hopefully. And we want to say a big thank you to Pat [the publican] who never gets a mention.” The winning team-mates are regulars at the Oxford Arms.
Appeal supporter Bill O’Connor, who has had a laryngectomy, handed over a £340 cheque – money raised from shaking a collection box.
Musician Billy Leeson, the former frontman of indie band Les Incompétents and now manager of More Assured, dropped by to boost the New Journal’s hamper coffers. His quiz team was named the Brothers Brecknock after the street in Kentish Town where Billy and brother Stan hail from.
