Python star reveals how a stuck bonnet got him his first laughs
MONTY Python legend Michael Palin lifted the lid on his humble beginnings in comedy when he opened Carlton Primary School’s new stage.
Named in the actor’s honour, the Michael Palin stage was the setting for the Kentish Town school’s Christmas production of Aladdin on Thursday.
Mr Palin recalled how his first school performance, in A Christmas Carol, turned to farce when his character, Mrs Cratchitt, became stuck in her bonnet and another child fell off the stage.
He told the packed audience: “It turned me into a comedy actor rather than a Shakespearean actor.”
Of the new Michael Palin stage, he said: “I don’t normally like having my name plastered everywhere but on a stage that’s fine because that’s where I started my career. I hope it will inspire some of the children.”
He promised pupils: “I’ll come along when you do Spamalot.”
Under the direction of drama teacher Maureen Philbert, the school drama club, now known as Carlton Community Players, wrote and choreographed the performance of Aladdin.
