‘Save our POs’ plea by Palin
COMEDY actor Michael Palin has joined the campaign to save Camden’s post offices.
As Royal Mail embarks on a nationwide review of post offices with a view to axing hundreds, the campaign to protect services in Camden grows stronger. Mr Palin said: “I’ve always felt the post office is an important focal point for the community.”
Regretting the loss of post offices in Mansfield Road, Gospel Oak, and Belsize Village, he called for better consultation with customers before others closed.
Last week, actor Tom Conti and TV presenter Gail Porter joined 100 campaigners demanding the re-opening of Haverstock Hill post office in Belsize Park, shut two years ago. Customers have also called for the re-opening of Belsize Village post office.
A Royal Mail spokeswoman said it was “committed” to re-opening a branch in Belsize Park. She added that it had been hoped the post office there would stay open until a replacement was ready. “But regrettably this did not prove possible and it would have been unfair to ask the sub-postmaster, who wanted to close, to wait any longer,” the spokeswoman said.
