King’s Cross demand
A FORMER councillor marched into the Town Hall yesterday (Wednesday) with a demand to halt the demolition of historic buildings in King’s Cross.
Ernest James, who was a Labour councillor until 2002, hand delivered a letter to Camden chief executive Moira Gibb on behalf of the King’s Cross Think Again campaign group and the King’s Cross Conservation Area Advisory Committee.
He wants assurances that the proposed demolition of the Culross and Stanley buildings behind King’s Cross station will not go ahead overnight.
With a judicial review still a realistic prospect, conservationists are concerned the buildings could be bulldozed before a case can be mounted in the High Court.
Some are worried the buildings could go in an “opening flourish” now that developers Argent Limited have been given permission to turn their £2 billion blueprint into a reality.
In the letter, Mr James demanded that Ms Gibb give assurances that the planned demolitions won’t go ahead without 14 days notice.
He said: “If you are unable to give definite dates I should be grateful if you would give me an indicative time scale for each possible demolition.”
Mr James added: “The Kings Cross Conservation Area Advisory Committee (the committee) is concerned that the buildings shall not be demolished prematurely, unlawfully or at all. The committee is also of the view that these buildings could and should remain to be used for housing.”
