Primary schools among the best
PRIMARY schools in Camden have been judged among the worst in England for results – but one of the best for all-round achievement.
According to the latest league tables, Camden was seventh in all England for ‘added value’ – which the Department for Education and Skills describe as “giving the best indication… of schools’ overall effectiveness”.
But overall performance in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science was among the worst in England.
Camden Council’s executive member for children, Councillor John Bryant, said: “The value added score measures what the school is doing to bring the pupils through. There’ll be all sorts of pupils from all sorts of backgrounds, with different backgrounds and some with language barriers.
“That means that every child improves through good teaching. Parents do not make judgements on results in league tables but on the quality of teaching and learning in a school.”
The tables also reveal a gulf between the best-performing schools in the borough and those whose results were less impressive.
Flagship schools like Holy Trinity and St Silas, in Kentish Town, and Fleet Primary, in Belsize, were among the best in the country.
Schools inspectors from Ofsted announced that Netley Primary School in Regent’s Park, which was warned last year, had been turned around. The said: “Netley has made impressive and rapid progress over the last year.” |
