Lib Dems are no greens
• THE letter from Lib Dem councillor Paul Braithwaite on December 14 in which he claims that there are “true greens in all of Camden’s political parties” is revealing but laughable (Positive campaign meant best candidate was elected, Dec 14).
It is revealing as it shows that as a true Lib Dem he enjoys the knockabout style of playground politics but knows nothing about true Green Party policy. His definition of “true greens” is clearly a typical Lib Dem one; yes, they happily add a light green fringe to a few statements when they want to appeal to green voters, just as easily as they turn into “true Conservatives” or “true Labour” when it suits them.
It is laughable, though, as the comparison with the Green Party policy is so stark.
Green Party policy is underpinned by the inescapable fact that to live as we do in the UK requires the resources of three Planet Earths – and we only have the one.
Accepting and adjusting to this reality leads to true green policies that are not only radical but also simply incompatible with the Lib Dem approach of business as usual, resource-hungry economic growth with a token wind turbine here, and a little bit of recycling there.
