Great memories of club
• IT'S a shame to read about ‘Infamous’ Tonbridge club (All smiles at opening at £1.7-million face-lift for boys’ club, Nov 30 ).
I was born and brought up in that area and regularly used Tonbridge club with my friends and always new Tonbridge club as being very famous for boxing and karate.
I was a former member of the karate club. I clearly remember in the late 1970s when, during a shooting of a Bollywood film, Professor Pyarilal Dharmandra had a fight with our karate teacher in Tonbridge club.
It’s not nice to read about a place being called ‘infamous’. Somehow it takes away the importance of our childhood as well as any good memories many of us may have.
I totally agree with Sheila Hibbert MBE (Outrageous to describe our renowned club as infamous, Dec 7) that the photograph should have been taken in front of the Tonbridge not in front of the Marchmont community centre as there is no connection between them.
I also want to thank Tom Hibbert, Sheila Hibbert and John Northeast for their hard work, effort and dedication throughout the years.
