Wenger heaps praise on reliant Robin van Persie
Dutch striker puts Arsenal in driving seat in Christmas period
ARSENAL manager Arsene Wenger praised his reliant Robin after the Dutch striker helped put the Gunners in the driving seat over the busy Christmas period.
Van Persie (right) has scored three goals in two games to help fire Arsenal back into third place in the Premiership following wins over Watford and Blackburn.
After watching van Persie score a stunning winner against the Hornets on Boxing Day, Wenger couldn’t help but hail the developing Dutchman:
“We needed to be patient, resilient and of course score a goal and it came from Robin van Persie, who is on fire at the moment.”
Van Persie scored twice against Blackburn on Saturday, but it was his match winner against Watford on Boxing Day that has again led to him being compared to fellow countryman and Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp:
Wenger added: There are similarities there. I think Dennis is a good model. I feel Robin is developing well because he is becoming a real team player,”
“I think when he first came here he was too obsessed with the technical side of the game, but against Watford again he worked for the team very hard and he scored again.”
Wenger has also reiterated his defiant stance that Arsenal still have a part to play in the title race, despite sitting 14 points behind leaders Manchester United.
“No matter how big the gap is you just want to do as well as you can.
“The boys have a great team spirit, they play well and do their best and they have quality.” He added.
The Gunners have added injury worries ahead of their visit to Bramall Lane on Saturday to take on a stuttering Sheffield United side.
In-form Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor has been ruled out after limping off during Tuesday’s 2-1 win over Watford with a thigh injury.
Defender Johan Djourou also picked up a slight thigh strain, but should be fit to play. |
