Critics come face to face with city academy sponsors
UNIVERSITY College London will be asked to explain why it wants to take control of Camden’s new secondary school when architects of the move face some of its fiercest critics next week.
Professor Michael Worton, the university’s vice-provost, will be quizzed by opponents of the university’s sponsorship of the school – provisionally planned for Adelaide Road, Swiss Cottage – on Tuesday night.
UCL was named as preferred sponsor by the Town Hall’s ruling Liberal Democrat and Conservative coalition last month.
Details about how admissions to the school will be handled and of membership of the governing body have been guarded by UCL even though a consultation period has run for eight weeks.
The UCL academy, however, is almost certain to be geared to raising standards in maths and sciences.
Professor Worton will be bracing himself for a series of tough questions at the meeting staged by Camden branch of the Campaign for State Education.
Also on the panel will be Fiona Millar, a school governor and education journalist who has spoken out against the use of city academies.
The meeting will be chaired by former Labour councillor Lucy Anderson, who once headed the Town Hall’s education department. Steve Sinnott, general secretary of the NUT, will also speak.
The meeting – open to all – is at Swiss Cottage School from 7.30pm.
