Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 11 October 2007

Where size does matter

• YOUR reporter (Mayor Ken says yes to green revamp of hospital site, October 4) quotes Councillor David Abrahams: “We’re concerned about the impact on residents in terms of overlooking and overshadowing and the fact that it’s going to have additional floors which will loom over residents.”
It is encouraging to see Cllr Abrahams apparently championing the rights of residents, particularly after he failed to voice identical concerns on behalf of Kentish Town residents in March this year.
Along with Conservative Mayor Dawn Somper and Labour Councillor Sue Vincent, Cllr Abrahams sat on a panel that chose to ignore numerous sound objections from dozens of residents and each of the three ward councillors, united in their opposition to a development of flats at 80 Falkland Road.
His apparent conversion comes at our expense, because in common with the hospital site, our homes and gardens will be permanently overshadowed by the proposal to build a three-storey block of flats in the cul-de-sac.
Yes, in terms of scale, there is a big difference between the two proposals. Originally stables, and more recently a single storey garage/workshop, the Kentish Town address is not in the same development league as the site of the former Middlesex Hospital.
But if the intended proposal goes ahead, neighbours lives will be blighted, many beautiful gardens will struggle to survive in the reduced light, and the integrity of the existing streetscape will be lost forever.
It is now almost three months since residents formally challenged the council’s oddly swift and seemingly covert decision, which, despite four previous outright rejections by officers for similar plans on the site, still did not merit a full development committee meeting.
We remain very concerned as to the manner in which officers carried out the ‘consultation’ process. Yet no response from the council has been forthcoming.
Apparently, when it comes to property development, size matters.
SIXTY concerned residents of Leighton Crescent, Leighton Grove,
and Falkland Road, NW5
