Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 11 October 2007
Crossrail welcome
• I AM sure many of your readers will be as pleased as I am that the funding for Prime Minister has given the green light to Crossrail – the east-west cross London rail link. Crossrail is a vital scheme for London which will underpinning for London’s business centres as well as areas of high deprivation in east London and opening up the Thames Gateway.
The scheme will also come to the southern boundary of Camden borough, giving residents greater flexibility on public transport and take people directly to the areas where job growth in London is the highest.
It will also increase capacity on public transport by an estimated 10 per cent.
It is a shame that when Camden councillors were asked to support the principle of Crossrail going ahead that the Conservative group decided to vote on block against it in June 2005.
I can only assume that they don’t support improved the vital public transport improvements and economic benefits that Crossrail will bring. Cllr JONATHON SIMPSON
Labour, King’s Cross
