FORMER Camden mayor and Labour
councillor Bob Hall has died. He was 66.
The ex-councillor, who passed away on Tuesday, served for 12 years during the 1980s and 1990s and was the mayor between 1997 and 1998. He served Swiss Cottage and Gospel Oak wards, and lived with his wife Maureen in Malden Road, Gospel Oak.
Since his retirement he worked as an organiser for the London Labour Mayors Association, helping lay on trips including a visit to the South Africa’s Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated, and the Dutch town of Arnhem where the British Army fought a bloody battle with German forces in the Second World War. He also recently took a delegation to Strasbourg to the European Parliament.
Before becoming a councillor he had worked for the council in the housing department and was a passionate trade unionist – he became the chairman for the Camden branch of the National Union of Public Employees.
Labour councillor Heather Johnson said he will be greatly missed by friends and comrades. She said: “He was passionate about his politics – he spent his life fighting for equality and freedom.”
