Inspector Roy Sloane with PC Tizer of King's Cross British Transport Police

It’s not a taser, it’s a Tizer! Cops unveil their latest weapon to clean up vermin

THEY may have dealt with some of the biggest and baddest crooks out there, but when the boys in blue at the King’s Cross British Transport Police were stumped by a tiny mischief-making mouse, they knew it was time to bring in the big guns – a 13-year-old moggy called Tizer.
“Pest control said they were using the strongest poison they had, but it wasn’t making any difference,” said Inspector Roy Sloane. “It was costing us an absolute fortune and it was a waste of time.”
So two months ago he went to the Cats Protection adoption offices in Junction Road, Archway, and left with Tizer.
“I went down and stroked a few of them, but he was quite special,” said Insp Sloane. “He had a toy spider which he dropped in my hand and I had to play fetch with him. We hit it off straight away.”
Tizer, who was adopted after his Kentish Town owner died, was described as “a bit of a geezer” by Alex Davies, the Cats Protection acting deputy manager. She said: “He loves people and the police station’s perfect for that.”
She joked that after advising Insp Sloane to make sure Tizer could listen to the radio, and suggested a standard police transistor, she turned up at the station to find he had a hi-fi to himself. “The atmosphere’s so changed in there,” she added.
“All the doors are open now, and there’s lots of happy policemen.”
Tizer now shares a room with Insp Sloane and has full access to the debriefing room, the canteen and the reception area.
“He’s done a great job. Since he’s been here I’ve seen just one mouse,” said Insp Sloane.
Since his arrival, Tizer has been spoilt with fast food dinner, while one officer is in the process of making him a high-visibility coat to match his collar.
“Some of the officers here are not small, but they’re so soft it’s unbelievable,” said Insp Sloane, who himself admits he has fallen for Tizer’s feline charms.
“I used to think cats were all right but very stand-offish.
“He’s not like that. I think he thinks he’s a dog.”
