Isaac Cobbinah, who will be seen in Britain’s first black opera
On stage, the schoolboy who has another string to his bow
MOST 12-year-olds are more concerned with S Club than Schubert and favour their Pokemon over Puccini – but not Isaac Cobbinah.
The schoolboy from Greenland Road, Camden Town, graces the London stage next Thursday as a violinist in Britain’s first black opera Bridgetower, with music by jazz impresario Julian Joseph and libretto by writer Mike Phillips.
Bridgetower: A Fable of 1807 is at the Hackney Empire for one night only before a nationwide tour.
It tells the true story of how the son of a freed slave in the 18th century becomes a brilliant prodigy under Beethoven’s wing.
Isaac, a pupil at Haverstock School, was spotted by Julian Joseph while performing at WAC Performing Arts and Media College in Belsize Park.
He has already appeared in a children’s TV show, Den of Doom.
