Happy ending for film director as gazebo wins approval
AS neighbourly disputes go, it was hardly on a gladiatorial scale but movie-maker Sir Ridley Scott will be quietly celebrating his victory nevertheless.
The director has won planning permission to build a luxury summer house in his Hampstead garden despite protests from one of his closest neighbours.
Sir Ridley has had to wait 12 months to get the final approval from Town Hall planners.
The 5ft high garden hideaway is designed to be the perfect finishing touch to his idyllic estate in Hampstead Grove. The gazebo will be built of stone and flint with a decorative owl finial perched on top.
His initial planning application, submitted a year ago, brought a warning from Julian Baughan QC, a court recorder living in a neighbouring street, that the gazebo would intrude on his privacy and the scenic view across Hampstead.
But the director of screen hits Blade Runner, Gladiator and Thelma and Louise presented the proposals to planners again last month and, this time, was given approval.
Council planning officer Carlos Martin said the gazebo “was not expected to result in a significant loss of light, outlook or privacy to any neighbouring property”.
