Pet Shop Boys at fan’s funeral
THE Pet Shop Boys have cancelled a gig in Romania to attend the funeral of an Arsenal fan known for his fanatical support for the team.
The pop duo should have been playing concerts in Bucharest but are instead expected to join thousands of Arsenal fans paying tribute to Dainton Connell, 46, affectionately known as “The Bear”.
Mr Connell, who worked as a bodyguard for the Pet Shop Boys, died in a car crash in Moscow two weeks ago.
Police are expecting up to 3,000 mourners – mostly fans Mr Connell met on the terraces – to gather at Arsenal’s stadium in Ashburton Grove before a funeral procession to Mary Magdalene Church in Holloway Road tomorrow (Friday).
The funeral procession starts from the brass cannons – renamed “The Bear Cannons” by Mr Connell’s friends – outside the stadium at 10am. Sections of road will be closed to allow it to pass safely.
A private family service, attended by Mr Connell’s wife and three children, will be held later in the day.
