In the dark over youth council
YOUNGSTERS attending an event to promote local democracy said they were unaware a youth council is being set up.
A steering group of 15 teenagers, who were appointed in January, have been meeting fortnightly to discuss the plans.
Camden Council has set aside £120,000 for the scheme but attempts to encourage more youths to get involved has not worked so far, judging by the feedback from students at the interactive event at The Irish Centre, in Camden Square.
Students from Parliament Hill School, South Camden School and Maria Fidelis School were given an opportunity for the first time to meet councillors.
South Camden’s, Fathia Omar, 15, said: “Young people’s opinions and views should always be considered when decisions are made in the world.”
Neither she nor her classmate, knew about the youth council.
Nadia Delgado, 16, from Maria Fidelis School, said: “This kind of thing makes me feel we can have a say but it makes me worry that’s as far as it’s going to go.”
Lib Dem Councillor John Bryant, who is responsible said: “I don’t want politicians of my age making decisions on how the youth council will be run.” |
