Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 25 October 2007

Maturity can be an asset

THERE was a time when maturity and experience were valued in a leader.
Not now, however, as evident in the resignation of Sir Menzies Campbell.
He was pressured by the media (and his party) to go because his age was 66.
That loses his party any dignity it had for he is an honourable man. Increasingly much of the media are obsessed with trivia (the New Journal an exception of course).
A substantial number of voters are in Sir Menzies’ age bracket or older, and were they to refuse to vote for anyone under 60 in the next election then politicians (and media) would respect them. When a senate finally replaces the archaic House of Lords those with something to contribute can be elected or appointed to it. Locally, were the alderman system to be brought back it could harness talented elders to benefit their community were they willing to serve.
