Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 25 October 2007

The people of Somers Town do not want a medical research centre here

DO you remember that some of the pension money designated for retired Camden Council workers was invested in an animal testing research lab called Huntingdon Life Science?
When the protesters besieged the site where the testing laboratory stands, the shares in that company went down and a lot of investors lost money.
I can only say that to allow a company to house their laboratory on the site behind the British Library would be reckless stupidity.
First of all, we who live in Somers Town don’t want it here.
This is our choice as locals to have a say in what goes on the land. I do not believe that any councillor could approve this.
The Mayor of London can buy the land compulsorily for the people.
There would be noxious substances housed in between three mainline stations, this could be an invitation to terrorists to harm us.
We have already suffered enough down to terrorism. The British library could also come under fire too which could devastate the country’s book collections security. Animal rights protesters would descend on Somers Town, the lab, the stations, the British Library and Eurostar.
This is not the kind of image that would go down well with the coming of the Olympics in 2012, and with travelling business people using the mainline stations. We don’t want the medical research centre here. Why create problems?
I feel that we need some affordable homes for those on low incomes.
Also the idea of Turkish baths could make good recreational and financial sense.
A better and happier use of land for all in the locality.
