Dig deep and help the New Journal Christmas hamper appeal
FOR many people Christmas is a time of good cheer, the warmth of loved ones and too much turkey – but not everyone is so fortunate. For some, the festive season is the hardest time of year – when short funds or a lonely bedsit stand in stark contrast to the laughter and surfeit of one’s neighbours.
The excesses of the Christmas season are part of its tradition, but in charity there is no excess. Many of our donors are not flush themselves, but while they make a living from what they get, they make a life from what they give.
For the past 27 years, New Journal readers and supporters have looked into their hearts and dug deep in their pockets, casting their bread upon the waters so others further downstream may benefit.
Each year their astonishing generosity buys hundreds of luxury hampers packed with goodies which Father Christmas and his New Journal helpers deliver to those in need of sustenance, company or just a little cheering up.
Behind many of Camden’s doors lie elderly people without families, like 94-year-old Jim Stevens, a blind war veteran who will spend his Christmas with a frozen ready meal and an audiobook. Others are struggling to keep families together or trying to make ends meet – now is the time to let them know they have not been forgotten.
Through your donations we delivered a record 300 hampers last year, this year we hope to better it.
Community groups are rallying to the cry. The Everyman Cinema in Hampstead is holding a fundraiser screening of the Jimmy Stewart Christmas classic It’s A Wonderful Life, while the Oxford Arms once more proves it is better to give than to receive at their annual pub quiz. Any other groups who want to muck in are most welcome.
But the biggest boost of all comes from individual readers.
No donation is too big or too small – it all adds up and it is all sincerely appreciated by the beneficiaries, who would have a colder Christmas without it. Please send your donations to the Camden New Journal Hamper Fund, 40 Camden Road, London, NW1 9DR.
